New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani condemned the ICE shooting of Oscar Belgal in Marble Hill after NYPD released bodycam footage of the immediate aftermath. The video shows officers arriving to find Belgal handcuffed on the ground, an agent in a neon vest nearby, and city police carrying the wounded man to a patrol car and driving him to the hospital themselves. DHS says agents did not know a 5-year-old child was in the vehicle and alleges the car was used as a weapon. NYPD surveillance showed plainclothes agents approaching with guns drawn as Belgal pulled into a parking space. The child was unharmed. A federal judge later blocked Belgal’s deportation. Chrystia Freeland’s memoir Unreliable Boyfriend is out October 13, and the title is the provocation. On Bill Maher she said the United States is “not a very reliable boyfriend right now.” The book is her insider account of trade talks, Trump-era negotiations, and what she calls a chaotic superpower. She is promoting it herself, with a video post on X and a Toronto launch on October 19. Trump has not commented on the book. He has commented on her: “totally toxic,” “she will not be missed,” and “we don’t like their representative very much.”

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe answered Elon Musk with one word: “No.” Musk posted that Quebec “should separate” and that Alberta and Saskatchewan “should separate too,” arguing the provinces “would be better off.” Moe rejected the idea outright as Western alienation, a Quebec election, and U.S. pressure collide. Canada’s unity fight is no longer theoretical. On October 19, Albertans vote on whether the province should stay in Canada or start the constitutional process for a binding separation referendum. In Quebec, the Parti Québécois just won a minority government. Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has pledged an independence referendum in a future term and says a PQ government will move to get the monarchy out of Quebec, including cutting support for the lieutenant-governor’s office. Most Quebecers still oppose leaving Canada, but the sovereignty debate is back at the center of provincial politics. At the same time, President Trump has kept up the “51st state” rhetoric through a trade fight with Ottawa, comments Canadian leaders say treat the country as an extension of the U.S. rather than a sovereign neighbor. Maverick News breaks down Musk’s posts, Moe’s reply, the Alberta ballot question, the PQ’s monarchy and referendum plans, and what Trump’s pressure means for Confederation. #canada, #remain, #alberta independence, #carney, #trump,
